“In Every Part” was the last track to be recorded and closes out the album. The third verse of this song opens with the line “when whooping cranes take to the skies / more than the stars in number”. Whooping cranes are one of the great conservation success stories. At one point in the 1940’s their wild population reached a low of 21 individuals. Due to innovative conservation techniques, they now number around 800 individuals. With this in mind, the image from the song takes on new meaning. Hearing the sandhill cranes at Crex Meadows in great numbers can perhaps give us an idea of what that image might sound like.
At its core, Field Song is an album that advocates for relationship with all the beings of the earth. If we are not intentional in cultivating these relationships the unmitigated loss that will ensue will leave us weakened and diminished. “In Every Part” sings of our interconnectedness, and of an afterlife where we are united with the earth and all its manifestations past and present.
Field Song is out THIS FRIDAY, 8/9. Come to the release show Friday : 7pm at New City Center / Walker United Methodist Church, with Sara Pajunen.
